TR6 TR-6 Rear driveshaft/hub Latest

Re: TR-6 Rear driveshaft/hub up-date

I too am very interested and have converted to the Infiniti Diff mated to my M3 Engine and Transmission. I am using the adapter plates supplied by Richard Good which translates to one shaft needing to be .625" longer and one .375" shorter than stock. My diff measures 13.5" wide with the adapter plates installed vs. 13.75" for the stock TR6. Then you have to keep in mind that the dang thing is offset .5" from center.

For my particular application, I am also converting the rear brakes to disc and will need to factor an additional .6875" length to the above numbers necessitating one shaft 1.3125" longer and one .3125" longer than stock configuration. With this said, I would need to know if the outer CV joint/shaft angle would be acceptable during suspension articulation because the actual hubs on my car are spaced out .6875" from the mounting surface on the swingarms by the disc brake bracket. I don't know if this makes a lot of sense but essentially, the outer CV is farther to the outside of the vehicle than stock which means the axle moves at a different angle when hitting the bumps. The stock shafts simply slide out on the splines to accomodate this difference.

Please don't hesitate to contact me off line about this. I need to get something lined up to handle my drivetrain and have been working with Moss UK / their supplier to manufacture ones for my application. I certainly would prefer to deal with a company in the US if possible.

Thanks,

Dave

Re: TR-6 Rear driveshaft/hub up-date

I just got an email from Kevin at cvaxles. If you left him a message on his cell (which I posted the # to by mistake) today asking for info then he's deleted it by accident. Can you call him back.

Oh and I changed the number in the earlier post to that of his shop. Oops...

Re: TR-6 Rear driveshaft/hub up-date

Dave, your best bet is to call the guy. He's not reading these posts afaik.

I just put it up here as an fyi in an older thread initially. There was enough interest that I posted more info in this thread. If you want something made, your best bet is to call the guy who's doing the work on my set.

Good Luck btw - oh and do you have any info about the rear disk conversion you are doing?

Alan, this isnt going so good!!, How much plunge does this axle allow for (what moss calls the in and out movent of axle at the spline)? We had a 1" difference of axle measurments from joint to joint, you have a different diff, I have triumph, what measurment did you end up giving? do you forsee a problem if I ordered the same as you but having the stock diff? my measurment was taken from the right (passenger)axle. as I said in one other post-- Moss mentions on thier axle site--they had a problem coming up with an axle that had enough plunge.

Re: TR-6 Rear driveshaft/hub up-date

ALLAN, I'm not sure that this is nearly as bad as it's being made out. I have a feeling that this is being overanalysed.

The Goodparts diff conversion that I have on the car uses the stock driveshafts and stock hub. I sent the guy a stock driveshaft and a stock hub. He says he can duplicate the functionality, but better.

If he can duplicate it, then it will work on my car just fine. It will also (since it's a duplicate of the stock) work with a stock diff.

I hate come off sounding like an ass, but I'm paying for custom work and I have a guarantee it will fit. One way or another this will work. Even if I have to send it back for a bit more fiddling...

If you are that converned, I'll "lend" you one of mine to try. Either that or make the same agreement, or wait until someone else buys one that they think is ok. You might have to pay full freight though.

In my case, my deal is it works or it's not satisfactory, and that given I don't pay. In my case payment is by Amex, so I'm not worried at all. You get the idea...

He mentioned 2" of plunge in passing btw in a prior conversation.

Plunge - Good point!! I learned this the hard way when fine-tuning my BMW differential installation. That plunge issue sucked the side shafts right out of the BMW diff when the stock suspension articulated over bumps.
Seems the CV setup must be created with a neutral (loaded)position in mind.
Interesting........
Look forward to this progress!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Re: TR-6 Rear driveshaft/hub up-date

Alana,

I measured the distance you asked. I had a little trouble actually getting an accurate measurement because of the boots and lack of space. I was able to measure against a tab on the suspension to the output flange on the Nissan dif. On the passenger side, the measurement was 9-3/8. The driver side was 10-1/2. See the pic.

Re: TR-6 Rear driveshaft/hub up-date

I thought the guy was going by measurments that Alan had given, I overlooked that Alan had sent him a stock unit, if he built one based on the stock axle unit and he guarantees it--thats good enough for me.

Re: TR-6 Rear driveshaft/hub up-date

Thanks Shannon, I appreciate the effort. One quick question - was that with the suspension loaded?

btw: The measurements I've got - 4 sets now - all seem to be fairly similar, and if the stock works this ought to. As ALLAN said above, he has the entire rear assembly and the instructions were to duplicate it, so it ought to be ok.

Now just to complicate things further, my car (which is the only one I didn't get a measurement off) is lowered 1"...

Re: TR-6 Rear driveshaft/hub up-date

Alana,

My car is lowered 1" also, and yes, my measurements were taken with the suspension loaded. For camera shots like that I have to shove my 4 year old under the car because I'm just too big now. Sure he screams a lot, but after about an hour he calms down and takes great photos. (For all you uber sensitive types, that was a joke).

On an even lighter note... I stripped my interior our tonight. I'm finally getting ready to pull the tranny to install an overdrive and even lighter steel flywheel. After that a new interior goes in.

Re: TR-6 Rear driveshaft/hub up-date

So then we know for sure if it works on mine you are fine...

Re: TR-6 Rear driveshaft/hub up-date

Shannon,
you should take lots of pictures and start a new thread on your interior redo. also, are you installing the overdrive or are you sending the unit out?

Update March 02

I spoke to the guy making them this afternoon. He's still building them. Reckons it's going to be a couple more weeks, and then probably another week to get to me and be put on my car. I'll post pictures when they come. Until then it's a case of hurry up and wait...
