TR6 TR-6 Clutch Fork Cross-Bolting ?

Hello.. As most are aware, the clutch fork pin is notorious for
breaking. At least one restoration guide recommends cross-bolting or cross-pinning to provide additional insurance against pin-breakage/fork-shaft wobble/clutch problems.

A few questions..

Does the current generation of "high strength" pins eliminate the need for a cross-bolt or pin?

If bolting/pinning is recommended, what size bolt or pin is used ? I have seen 1/4" grade 8 bolts mentioned.

Are two bolts/pins nearer the ends of the fork better than one bolt or pin in the center of the fork ?

Thanks..

JC1, the new pins are great and the need for the additional bolt is only a safety precaution. A 1/4 inch grade 8 is not taking enough meat out of the shaft to be a concern. Don't use anything that will stick out. Cut or grid off any excess.

My opinion, the "high strength" pins are actually about the equivalent of the original pins. As outlined in the article on the Buckeye Triumphs site, the original design is somewhat dubious. So if you have it apart, I recommend adding the second pin. Keep the original pin in it's original location, and locate the new one some distance away.
