Afternoon All:
I see a tranny dip stick on sale in eBay. So I scratches me head and start the thought process, I don't remember seeing one in the myriad of boxes of parts that I have. I went to the shop and looked at the two trannies that I have. Don't even see a hole for a dip stick. Moss motors has one in their catalog but the Stanpart book doesn't show one????? Wasup? Would some kind soul out there give me an education, or even a little info would be greatly appreciated.

My guess is that someone is mistaking one of the long bolts that go in to the side of the tranny case as a dipstick. As far as I know, the only way to tell if the tranny is full of fluid is to undo the filler plug and squeeze some fluid in until it weeps out.
 
I missed the joke. Anyway, the dipstick is the big knurled nob
that sits atop the tranny cover to the right and about halfway between the two pressure switches. Unscrew it and the long dipstick goes down into the gearbox.

I just checked - the dipstick was deleted after TS50,000. That's why my TR3s on which I've played with tranny maintenance haven't had them (both post-50K cars.)
 
The dipstick was utilized on the TR2's and earlier TR3's. It was a PITA to access, so they went to the fill plug method. According to Roger Williams restoration manual the elimination of the dipstick happened at about TS50,000. I think it was earlier then that, but I don't really know when. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

My car is a post 60000, so I would think that its a stickless tranny.
