TR2/3/3A TR 3A Speedometer Cable Route

Folks,

What is the correct route for the speedometer cable from the overdrive to the speedometer?
It appears to me that the cable is enclosed by the rubber boot at the overdrive, and goese directly under the passenger side floor board. But I can't see how it crosses through the frame to the driver's side.

It goes up the firewall, still on the passenger side, then crosses over on the ledge in front of the battery box. Should be a clamp in the middle of the ledge to hold it there. ISTR there should be a clip into the frame rail too, but not sure offhand.

When it crosses in front of the battery box, do you mean on the engine compartment side of the battery box and below the battery box?

This is the cable coming out of the tranny and over to the frame.


Hard to follow, but zoom in and you can see the cable coming up the firewall and clamped on the vertical rise near the tunnel edge AND dead center in front of the battery box.


And here it goes in that nasty grommet near the pedal box.
 
While we are talkng about OD speedo cables has anyone ever had an oil drip from the speedo cable at the speedometer? I am just back from a 200 mile road trip in 80 degree beautiful weather but had a couple of drops of oil on my calf. Upon inspection it was coming from the cable at the speedo. Could it have migrated all the way from the gearbox and if so why?

Supposedly, the spiral wrap on the inner cable can act like an auger and pump oil (slowly) up to the head. I'm not sure that explanation is correct, but the speedo on TS13571 certainly had oil in it when I got the car.

IIRC, there is a seal inside the speedo drive assembly at the gearbox, between the brass bearing and the adapter that the cable screws onto.

John. I see that the OD cable is attached to the firewall by a clip. What is the clip screwed to - the plate for the steering column (assume a rubber seal here if left hand drive) or to the plate that holds the heater hose in place? Thanks, Chuck

The OD cable is held to the firewall by 2 half clips that are held themselves with slot head sheet metal screws. The line that looks like it is clipped to the heater firewall fitting is the clutch hydraulic line. Here is a pic showing it a bit more clearly...



Remember that my pics are of my TR2, as that has an overdrive. The TR3 has a different brake/clutch master cylinder, so the hydraulic lines on the TR3A are different.
