I took this car apart several years ago and took notes and photos but apparently not of the dash. The project got put on the back burner due to a family illness. The car is POST 6K left hand drive. I see photos of the speedometer on the left and some on the right. I know racers want the tach on the right to be near the oil and temp gauges. Roger Williams Restoration book has photos both ways- left and right. What was original/correct? I have two more original cars in a building in New Jersey but won't be back there until July. This car is in Atlanta and I am ready to do the dash. As to the other gauges I think top left is Oil; top right is Fuel; bottom right is Amps and bottom left is Temp. Thanks Tom

Small gauges: For a left-hand drive US car, facing the gauges: Oil pressure @ upper left, Temperature @ bottom left, Fuel gauge @ upper right, Ammeter @ bottom right.
Big gauges: TR3 has speedo on right, tach on left. (TR2 is reversed, with the speedo on the left).

I am sure the Tach was originally right for the reasons you state, but rallying was big “in the day”, so the factory moved the speedo to the right position so the navigator could use it for calculations.

Under the dash on my car (TS23677L), there is a small hole for the odo reset, so the speedo can only go in the left position unless I want to drill another hole in the dash.

According to Piggot's book, page 148:

TS29098 Mar 58
Positions of speedometer and rev
counter reversed, at Least for US
market cars. Speedometer now on the
left as viewed by the driver.

Under where the speedo goes, there is going to be a hole in the sheet-metal and fabric of the dash for the mileage/trip setting rod. If your speedo has a trip counter, you are kinda stuck putting the speedo there, but if no trip counter or hole you could be on the fence with an early car.
