Afternoon:
I just finished reviewing the TRA's "judging Standards and Restoration Manual" my bible on my frame off restoration. Didn't say anything about the color of the fuel tank. I'm kind of curious as to whether it was black or body color. I suppose that it doesn't make much difference because one doesn't see it but I'm just curious. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

My TR3A still has much of the original paint. The fuel tank is black. My body color is also black. I have never seen a fuel tank any color other than black in a car that was painted by a person with a conscience.
No TRA judge will tear your car apart to check what color is behind your panels.
 
FWIW, the fuel tank on my 59 is the same faded gray as the other parts of the car that haven't been repainted (e.g. underside of trunk/boot lid).
 
I've been into several TR3s and all the tanks I've seen that were not messed with have been black laquer.
 
Speaking of fuel tanks...that's the 1st step of my newest reestoration TR3 project I just started. What's the best and easiest approach of flushing out ans testing for leaks. I plan to just replace the lines....right now I've got it running off the washer bottle.
