TR 3 Top Cover Problem

I finally got The top cover all put together, put the O/D switches in (another story) and find that I can't get it into reverse. The reverse shaft does not want to budge. pulled the detent and its all correct but still won't budge.

Probable cause?

Your thoughts appreciated, Tinkerman.

Either one of the other shafts is not in neutral; or the neutral interlock is messed up. Always seems to take me 2 or 3 tries to get both balls and the rod in the right place at the right time.

Last time I went through it, I found that some previous mechanic had used the wrong rod, and left out a ball to compensate.

What Randall wrote is correct, but this may also be of help to you or other sidescreen drivers.

The 1st gear and reverse gear are not synchro gears. I often hear a novice sidecreen driver grinding the gear teeth away and cursing out loud at this when he has the engine running and he wants to back up or pull away from the curb or when the light just turned green. What he has to do is so simple.

In neutral while waiting, depress the clutch pedal, flip the gear-stick into the 2nd gear gate, and then directly into forward or, in your case, into reverse. This will give you a smooth engagement and no more grinding.

Sucess, Randall, the shifting is now smooth as glass. I now have a much better understanding of the interlock. Why it's there and how it does it's job.

Don thanks for the tip, it will go into my tips archive.

Regards and thanks, Tinkerman
