TR 3 Ring gear to flywheel orientation?

In looking at various pieces of literature, it seems to me that the chamfer on the ring gear faces the block and not the tranny. Am I correct in that assumption?

Are there any locking tabs or lock washers on the ring gear bolts?

Thanks, Tinkerman

My recollection is that pre-TS50000 the chmfer faces the block... post-TS50000 the chamfer faces the gearbox.

Difference is a change in the starter with the earlier starter engaginf by thrusting rearward to the flywheel and the later starter drawing forward into the flywheel.

I believe this is also the point where the ring gear changed from press-on to bolt-on.

Geo's recollection is good. I'll add, that if you're taking the ring gear off, I've read in some Triumph service manuals that it's advisable to mount the ring gear 90 deg from where it now is if there is wear on the teeth. Generally, the engine stops in one of two places 180 deg apart. By rotating, you will get a new set of teeth exposed to the starter drive when it enters the ring gear. Look at the ring gear very closely, and see if you see any of that wear pattern.

Thanks fellows, I scored on a new ring gear on ebay awhile back. Just now putting it on. I put it on according to what I saw in the factory manual but off course that would be wrong because of the starter change.

From what I read the generation changed at TS60000 and I have a post 60000 car. and subsequently the long nose starter.

Again thanks for the info, Tinkerman
