Well, you'd be looking around $1k (+/-) for a new one that likely would take as much or more "fettling" than a good used one. I'd think somewhere around $200-300 for a good rust-free original fender needing only a small amount of preparation for painting.

I bought 2 rear fenders at differnt times off ebay. Both are original and in decent condition with minimal rust, etc, but one fit and one didn't. One cost me $199+45 shipping, the other $100+62 shipping. It took a while, and I think I got a good price, but don't know if it's 'fair'. Anyone who has ever been divorced can tell you, fair is in the eyes of the beholder.

I buy and sell on eBay and have been doing it for a number of years. What is a fair price is what you are willing to pay for an item that you need. Since you are talking to a friend and not trying to buy one on eBay you have an advantage. I am kind of with Andrew $200 to $300 is probably what it might be worth. I almost hate trying to deal with a friend because you usually end up in a "how much do you want for it, I dunno how much will you give me." kind of dialog. I would be tempted to offer him $200 and then go from there. At $200 you are certainly not taking advantage of him and I think it would be fair. I sold a rear fender awhile back for $355 on eBay, but there were several folks bidding on it and I was the one that came out the winner. Money wise that is. I also agree with Texas Knuckle Head, fair is in the eyes of the beholder.
Make an offer and see what happens. Maybe start out at $150 to give each of you some wiggle room.

I admit that I based my "guesstimate" on a sale I made several years ago. I had a very nice pair of straight TR3 front fenders, each needing only a relatively small amount of patching at the bottom. I got $400 for the pair, and I honestly wouldn't have taken much less. Admittedly, the buyer had driven down from somewhere in Ontario, Canada, to my house near Albany, NY, and he likely figured "what the hey...I've come this far"!
Oh, and I've also seen "new" fenders that, indeed, bore a passing resemblance to originals in overall shape but might as well have been for a Humber Super Snipe. Without an amazing amount of work, they'd never fit an otherwise straight, original TR!
