TR2/3/3A TR-3 input shaft bushing

In the clutch end of the crank there is a hole where the input shaft bushing goes. I was cleaning it out today getting ready to put the bushing in and what I felt was fairly rough. I used a mirror and a flashlight and saw gunk in there , my dumb question of the day is: It should be smooth in there, right? It's not enough to impede the bushing, the old one came out and didn't look all chewed up. Should I use some real fine emory cloth and clean it up?

Your thoughts as always very welcome, Tinkerman

The pilot bushing is to support the long end of the input shaft going into the gearbox and to keep it centrally aligned. The ones I've seen and udes are oil-impregnated bronze or brass. These are porous and I always let them sit in oil to make sure that the bushing is fully loaded with oil before I put it in. Usually, I'm not in a hurry so I leave it submerged in the oil for a week or so.

You should clean all the crud out the hole firat. I think that if you can easil;y slide the new one onto the input shaft as a pre-test and if it slides into the hole in the rear end of the crankshaft, it should be fine.

:iagree:
I'd start with solvent rather than abrasive, since what you are seeing should be just old dried oil & dirt stuck to it. But the hole should be reasonably clean.

Thanks, knew it should be clean just not sure how clean.

Question answered, Thanks, Tinkerman

Happy to report, the solvent cleaning worked very well and that the properly oil soaked pilot bush went in with a minimum of fuss and bother! Yea. Thankful for every small victory I get with this critter.

Thanks to all of you for your comments.
