Torsion Bars Installed!

Whew! What a chore! I installed my front torsion bars tonight on the EType! Man, that's not a fun job to get it right! Now I just hope and pray that once the engine is in and all the other weight is on the car, the ride height will be correct. (fingers crossed!)

Re: Torsion Bars Installed! & Ride height "A"

Hi Basil: Great web site!!
What is your final ride height "A"? I used the manual specified guage distance of 17 13/16" and my ride height turned out to be about 7 3/4" instead of the 8 3/4" specified in the manual. According to Classic jaguar the ride height "A" should be about 1" lower than the 8 3/4" for better handling.
What's your opinion? What experience do others have on this topic? I don't want to readjust my torsion bars if don't have to.

Welcome to my humble forum. I have not determined my final ride height yet because my engine is not yet in, nor the bonnet, interior, etc. To accurately measure ride height all that stuff needs to be in, and a full load of gas, and weight for driver/passenger added. On the question of ride height and the book-spec versus one inch lower, I guess I don't have an opinion on that yet. Generally, the folks at classic Jags know what they are talking about, but I think I plan to shoot for what the book suggests as a starting point and then only lower it if I'm unhappy with the way it either rides or looks. I guess Id say if you're happy with where its sitting, keep it that way. If you're using the original torsion bars, your ride height may be lower than the book value simply due to the torsion bars being old and tired, thus even though you set them at 17 13/16th, that setting may be providing less ride height just due to tired TBs. I'm wondering if that might not indicate that new TBs are in order?
Just a thought.

Basil: Thanks for your comments. Another question: Does the setting of the torsion bars and resulting ride height have any relationship to the alignment of the bonnet? Or,do the torsion bars play a part in getting the proper alignment of the bonnet?
