Torque Rating on Rear Shackle Bolts?

Hi guys,

What should the rear shackle bolts be torqued to on my '66 Sprite? I noticed that the shackles aren't sitting perpendicular to the road surface and I figure it's probably because I didn't torque the bolts down enough when I converted the bushings to Poly. How important is it that those sit straight up and down and what should the bolts be torqued to?

Thanks,

Sean

I don't recall seeing an "Official" torque for 'em, but if they're not perpendicular, they're movin' around under load. You'll notice (or should) a "twitchy" rear-end on hard acceleration or braking... steering input needed to correct. Or the thing will "crab" down the street. If left go they will wear against the axle tube, cutting into it and wearing the shackle bolts.

Short answer would be: tight enuff to keep 'em from slipping/moving.

Dr. Entropy,

To clarify, I'm referring to the rear shackles that make up the rear-attachment point for my semi-elliptic springs, not the u-bolts that attach the springs to the axle.

Should I assume the answer is the same for the axle u-bolts and rear spring shackles?--tight enough to keep 'em still?
