Watching a new (to me) episode of Top Gear. they are going to Albania to "test" the best car for the Albanian Mafia. Aside from all the usual Top Gear imperialism and goofiness, there are some amazing relics of the Cold War - in one scene an abandoned submarine base with rusty AA guns pointed at the sky and rusty submarines (for sale) just tied up to the quay. In another scene they drive through two rows of literally dozens of old MIG fighters abandoned. mindboggling to see.

I worked on a couple of old Russian Submarines. The problem is not the initial cost, it's the Russian Mafia and their added "fees" that will more than double the cost to get it out of port.

A local group of entrepeneurs bought a MiG 21. We let them use our hangar to assemble it. They or another bunch, I forget which, bought a couple La-29s and brought some Czech mehanics over to assemble them in our hangar. Were we too nice?

Anyway the Czech mechs looked at the MiG 21 and said. "Eez good for pylon."

Hopefully, the MiG is guarding an airport gate somewhere today!
