Tool ID please.

I snagged a Craftsman Torque wrench for a buck at a yard sale today (Yes, it's going back to Sears tomorrow!) but on it was this crazy device....
Anyway, I have no idea what it does or is, but I searched the US Patent Office for it, and it gave me bunch of techno bable, I was hoping someone could translate it, and tell me in lay lay lay mans terms, what it is.

Kind of like a drill chuck, but designed to grip hex head nuts & bolts. As you turn the collar, the jaws move forward and in, or outward and back, to change the opening.

At least that's what the patent you referenced says; and the photo looks like it.

That collar seems to be stuck, so I'll mess with that later, but a Metric/SAE gator grip on steroids seems like a handy tool.

It's an adjustable socket probably made by Channel Lock, I have one that is stamped Channel Lock and it came with a 3/8" drive ratchet handle. They were made in several size groups. I thought I had the only one.
