Here is todays project. The trans. Someone has been in it and it looks great inside. The layshaft and layshaft bearings need to be replaced and I was thinking 2nd syncro would be worn because it was easy to beat the syncro on a normal shift. Well its got a steel 2nd syncro in it. Last time i ran into this I changed 2nd gear and put a brass syncro in. I just do not know if the 2nd gear in the trans is supposed to be for a steel or brass syncro. Its just too much work to pull it if installing a brass syncro on that gear does not work. The steel syncro is rubbing on the taper and not bottoming out. It should be working...???. Could it have been the lubricant used in the box? I've seen some of the SnakeOil "treatments" negate the balk ring's effective "grabbing" action before.

Steel does seem awfully hard between 1st &2nd in a non-syncro tranny....what kind of fluid was in it: engine oil or gear oil?

I do not know what oil was in the trans. 3/4 syncros worked well. The fluid appeared thick but did not have that 90wt smell. Its cold here also which could account for the thicker than normal appearance. I thought I had a 2nd gear for a brass syncro trans...no luck. This will be interesting to see if the brass syncro works with the original gear. If all goes well the engine and trans will be installed tomorrow. Think its time to clean the work bench?

Bob, I love the photo above with what appears to be a space heater on top of the lp tank with the fan behind it. I think I now understand what you meant earlier in the thread about waiting for the paint to flash!

Paul, Great to have you at the BCF. I am very careful not to run that heater when there are paint fumes in the area. Looks a bit different then when you saw the car at the Polar Bear run. Here are todays pics. I think I will call it a day. Maybe have 2 lunches and a pot of coffee. Bob

Tony, Here is a pic of the Isuzu trooper 2 starter. Before and after modification. On the last 67 project I purchased, the starter fit but was close. The red 67 should have had more room since the engine and trans mounts are good! Not the case. It took a few whacks on the firewall for clearance. I also had to move the steel brake lines toward the front of the car. They moved easily and I had to drill one 1/8 hole to secure them to the chassis of the car. I posted some of this a few minutes ago but it is not here. Maybe I did not hit submit or it will pop up later. This is a $20 gear reduction starter from pull-a-part! Bob

Partial update. More parts installed in the engine bay along with the exhaust and the dash and windshield are in. I'm not really ready to start posting pics but gotta make myself do it. Bob

Hey, Bob....I found your glasses...they are on the dash. If you are like me, that is one pair of many readers for close up work. LOL It looks great! I would like to know if you painted the dash and what you used for the the teture like in that pic above.

Try to look past the dust. Its been a while since I have posted progress pics. A couple of snags happened. I was cleaning the bottom of the fuel tank when it started getting damp and it had a fuel smell. New tank went in. Also when I went to put antifreeze into the radiator that I already had checked and repaired before driving the car last year ($60)...Guess what..leaks everywhere! I think some sand hit the tubes when i was blasting the brackets. The radiator shop could not repair it. Another $60 for checking and repairing a spare radiator! Now i have to paint the 2nd radiator. Darn, Just ran out of black paint. Had to pick up another quart. Other than that the suspension is black, engine accessories are on,exhaust is on, doors assembled, some interior bits are going in and the dash is almost done. On the 14th of this month it will be 2 months on this project. Got some chrome wires coming. I will have to wait for warmer weather to install the top and i have not thought much about weather to do the seats myself or have a professional do them. Thats around $300 just for installation of the new leather covers. I do want them to look professionally done so its probably time to open the wallet again. Bob

Throw those seats in the car, with the upholstery and come visit your family. While your here, I'll put the seats together for a lot less the $300.
I used to do all the leather work for Honda when I employed by them.

If the seat foams etc are new the seats should snug up well with only a bit of tweaking. I paid about the same last time I had leather seats installed so I don't think you're getting taken for a ride (unless I was - LOL), but might be worth trying it on your own first. You're not going to turn anything by trying.
