Family lore has it:
our most infamous ancestor was a bandit, hung as a horsethief in West Texas.......i forget his name.
(Great Aunt Mary Murrel, (from Big Spring, Tx) used to say to us kids " you behave yourself or you'll swing like uncle so & so".)

SWMBO apparently also had a poacher in her family tree - Mick Jagger. (really just not that Mick Jagger)
 
haven't a clue who my ancestors were and don't really care, too lazy to look it up.
 
My great, great, great, great Uncle is Benjamin Franklin. My great grand father was the commander of Fort Pitt and his commission order is signed by Abraham Lincoln. We still have it. My grandfather was assigned to the Pentagon during WWII. One day a request came across his desk for an extreme amount of money. When he tried to find out what it was for, he was told it was classified. At lunch with a colleague, he made mention of the request. Said he wasn't going to sign it until he was told what it was for. When he returned to his office, two men showed up at his door. They verified his name, asked if he'd spoken with his colleague about the issue. He said yes. He again stated he would not sign it until he knew what it was for. They told him he was under order by the President to sign the request. So he signed it "under orders from the President of the United States." Any guesses what the money was for? Ever heard of the Manhattan Project......?
 
I used to work with a guy who worked in Saudi Arabia with a bunch from the UK. Apparently, having initials after one's name carried a lot of weight. Things like PhD, MS, PE, etc. One day a guy shows up with initials "S.G.G" behind his name. My co-worker's curiosity got the best of him and he asked: "I'm not familiar with the initials S.G.G. What do they stand for? The reply: "Seventh Grade Graduate."
 
Myany times great grandfather was an early settler in St. Clair County Illinois (just east of St. Louis), the cabin he built in 1802 (before the Louisianna purchase) still stood until a few years ago, my mom lived in the cabin the depression when her father couldn't find work in the city. Relatives were unsuccessful in getting it listed on the state and local registers of historic places.

My Aunt had a passion for genealogy & my sister picked up the mantle.
It's very interesting study, and I enjoy all their hard work.....but I am glad it is their work.
