Actually, the worse weather problem of that time was the Year Without a Summer.
Volcanic ash (probably from Tambora near Krakatoa) covered the northern hemisphere in 1815-16. Insufficient sunlight meant crop failures and cold temperatures with nearly endless rains. The Connecticut river (Hartford) froze over in July. Seeds would germinate in spring, but freeze several weeks later. Seeds planted again, same thing again. Paintings in the period showed skies more red/orange than usual.
I know it's much easier to deal with extreme weather these days with improvements in everything from furnaces and AC to clothing, but Jan 1 this year we had a high of 80 and a low of 30. Summer to freezing in less than a day. Yesterday was 76 and this morning was 29.
Of course each swing is ushered in by 25-35 MPH winds gusting to 50 or higher, because why not.

Had a couple days of that, not ~quite~ below freezing tho. With five tornadoes a bit south of us. One trashed a marina and a trailer park, put all the debris into a farmer's cow pasture... And we've a couple more days of the same to come soon. Gah.
