Went out yesterday and car would almost not run. Too much fuel.

After messing last evening I found that choke was not releasing properly so front carb was always with the choke on.

Much messing this morning. Adjust this tweek that. Ordered a couple of new springs, the choke return ones from Tony. Then had an idea, made them one turn shorter. Figured they lost a bit of tension over the years. Did not fix the prob.

The fuel rod that goes up into the bottom of the carb did not return properly, Keep in mind now that I had replaced everything in the carbs when I rebuilt them.

So pulled the fuel rod out, sanded it down some with real fine sandpaper and polished it with some of that brass polish that comes in cotton balls. Really gave it a super finish.

Shoved it back up in the bottom of the carb and all is well. Smooth as silk.

Might want to check guys that the choke is really off. Bet that improves my gas mileage.
 
Jack, i am forever checking that my jets re-seat where they belong when the choke is off. I started my car the other day and it was running rough....bimbling about under the hood trying to figure out what was wrong , i absentmindedly tapped the float boal with a screw driver handle and Voila! running like a top again...

Just another day in LBC land..

How do you get the fuel rod out?
Is there a diagram of these things somewhere online?
The H1 is a slightly different animal than the HS series that I am more used to, and to be honest I haven't taken an SU apart in over 20 years. :wink:
 
These are H1 carbs Rick. The rod comes out just by pulling down on it. Slides out the bottom.

Yes, those little cork seals can be pretty tight on a recently rebuilt carb. They do loosen up eventually, but of course that can take some time.

If you slide the jet out, be careful putting it back in, as it's easy to damage those seals.
