Today's frustrating goof...

I dropped a nut down into the water jacket of the head.

The engine is on a stand, so I thought it would be no problem to get it to roll back out. Wrong! I tilted, shook, and rocked that stand every which way and could not get it to come out.

So, I pulled the head back off and shook and tilted it for a good ten minutes to get it out.

Now I'm irked and my back is sore.

Now that sounds like fun...

At least you got it out -- makes dropping a pick into a guitar seem tame by comparison.

Better now than when the engine is installed in the car. BTW, what's going on with that engine in the Ugly Bug. It sounded plenty stout when you were in Dayton last August.

Magnet on a stick, available at any parts/tool store. 1/4" to 1/2" in dia. Lets you go fishin into those narrow places.

Jim

Magnet won't help too much with a stainless nut in an iron head.

Jim, the Ugly Bug has been running with almost no compression on the number one cylinder and very little on number three. The leak down seemed to indicate broken rings based on the sound coming from the crankcase.

Actually, I'm eager to tear that engine apart to see how it has held up. So .. knock on wood that my rebuilt spare runs without a hitch.

Trevor,

You won't believe the diffeeence in how Bugsy looks after the bonnet got fitted better and was painted. You saw how rough the bonnet was, well it was worse under the primer. I'm happy with it for now and I must say after changing out the stock air filters to bases and filters only, I can't believe the difference in how the engine is breathing. Much more power and I must say Bugsy is running quite Spritely!!! Going for a run to the hardware store in a few minutes as a matter of fact.

The magnet-on-a-stick was my first thought too, till I also considered the elements! What might work (never done it, but...)would be a vacuum/suction tube...!!! (There's no imoticon with a lightbulb! :frown: )

What kind of sounds? If ring problem, pressure should be building in the crankcase which will show itself at the crankcase vent.

I would look first for burned valves just because it's eaiser (don't have to pull the engine).

Jim

Yup, I was loosing a bunch of oil.

When I did a leak down, the manifolds were pretty quiet, but there was a good hiss and air draft coming from the timing vent cover.

I believe it must then be the rings.

Since you will probably pull the engine to replace the rings, you might as well do it all, brgs, seals, valve job, etc.

Jim

I probably will.

I've already built my spare 1275 to put in the Sprite. So now I'll rebuild this one to go in the Midget. I'm think fuel injected turbo charged.
