well summer has finally arrived in Canada. As we've been moving I've had Ms Triss in a friend's garage. This has made it hard to drive her - this and the lousy weather. We get the house Tuesday and since I've been rambling on about the car for 2 years at my wife's church, I figured I should show it off at least once. went to get it and had a gorgeous drive over. For awhile I was tailing an original T-Bird. realized there may just be a few T-bird design cues in the square body Midget. After lunch went to visit a friend who was working on a Scootacar - with the car's owner. made some adjustments to mine and then back to the friend. All in all about 40-50 miles in 75 deg weather and the sun shining. I loved it. Even had her up to 70 on the highway.

Only one glitch - she still hesitates occasionally and backfires (exhaust) a little less but still does. If I hit the gas, she pulls out of the hesitation and I'm not sure if it happens at low revs - just moderate AND only when the engine is hot. Any ideas? I've tightened the manifold, and rechecked the bolts - that helped lots. Fuel line is routed behind the heater box. though I have no heat shield. I think I need a new needle just cause mine is old and a little dinged but it works (BTW HS4 not ZS any more)

thoughts?

thanks
JP

To me it sounds like you have a lean condition at midrange-
possible fixes:
-run the jet down 1 flat and see how it goes
-figure out which needle you have and get one that is one step richer at midrange
-modify the profile of your existing needle (I DON'T recommend this one!!!)

Sounds like a good run.
I took my son of 8 on a cruise yesterday. About 70 miles along the country and Lake Michigan lakeshore, through Grand Haven, along the river. Perfect day for it. Aside from some bozo trying to kill us with a pickup, it was perfect. I'd do that for a living.

Bill, can you or someone else help me make sense of reading a needle profile and how I'm supposed to know what to buy. I've had a couple of suggestions as to different needles but have no idea why

OH, and while I am very interested in the needle stuff, I'm actually wondering whether I have a vacuum issue as I failed to mention that when all this is happening, the engine idle fluctuates about 200 rpm and is higher than normal. In other words, I have it set at 1000 but it idles at 12-1400 when all this takes place. Makes me wonder if the caqrb is wearing out since it has never been rebuilt.

Does anyone recall what the MG Metro carb is that folk recommend for a 1500?
