Today the head, maybe the block for the weekend?

Last night I picked the head up from the machine shop and spent some quality with the owner. Sadly, I did not have my camera with me. But he is documenting every step.

He showed me his solution for the thrust washers, using Scott Helms thicker bronze units (ala Tom), the line boring was completed yesterday and the cam bearing journals would be cut today (5 hours on the machine, minimum), After I get the disk from his camera, I will post what we decided to do and what I learned about thrust washers, crank journal radius issues and getting oil to both of them properly. We've definitely strengthened a weak spot, but the engine has to be out of the car and at a very good machine shop to do it.

Next stop is the cylinder boring, final deck resurfacing and complete bath in hot soapy water under pressure. Every bolt thread has been cleaned and bottom tapped, and the parts are all there for the assembly of the short block. The flywheel, clutch and damper should have been balanced today.

Hopefully, Bob will be building by Friday and I'll pick the assembled short block up on Sat or Mon. Erik will be waiting to paint the block final assemble all of the parts that I've cleaned, rebuilt or purchased new.

I keeping my fingers crossed for a lot of driving next weekend to get ready for the British Car Circuit the spring and summer.

Larry,

I'll be much happier when it's all back together. And so will my wife. I've got stuff all over the house waiting to get installed.

Can't convince her it's "Contemporary Techno-Art" Paul?!? :jester:

Head looks spiving, BTW.

Looking great, Paul. Your knowledge and resources
always impress me. Wish I could get mine on the road
as soon.

Re: Today the head, maybe the block for the weeken

I just stopped on the way back from Ct at the machine shop. The cam bearing journal boring has been running for over 6 straight hours. It is very slow and tedious and Bob has to stand there as it runs, so he's not real happy about it either, but as he says, it is what it is and that's why it costs what it does. He can only take 0.010" at a time from each journal, then it's start back at the front and go through again. I'm still glad that I'm getting it done, no matter how long it takes.

This is not a job that can be shut down and run tomorrow. Once it starts, it runs until done, so there it is. Two more passes and the 0.140" will be removed and the cam bearings can be installed before final assembly. Hopefully, tomorrow the cylinders will get bored, another hot soapy bath and then assembly will start by Monday. This really is like watching grass grow.

I asked him to take a couple pictures of the radius on the crank journal so that I can explain the process and machining of the mating thrust washers when this is all done. Then I got reminded that the crank needed a final polish which would make it look really nice before assembly, but that's an in house project, so no big deal.

It's 70 degrees and sunny and I want my baby back together soon.........very soon.......

Re: Today the head, maybe the block for the weeken

Paul, you're more gutsy than me. After a guy's been
baby-sitting that thing for however many number of
hours, you still asked him if he'd take some pictures
for you? I know, you really were prepared to duck,
right?

Kidding aside, you're gonna blow my doors off getting
your machine together....and I will be envious....again.

S-i-g-h. Such as it is. When I grow up.......

Actually, maybe you'll have pity on me and assist
me with getting my darned distributor in, huh?
That's my next skeleton.

Re: Today the head, maybe the block for the weeken

2W,

No need to be envious. Yours is looking really good now. I'm sure that your assembly is going to be just great. And you have the opportunity to do much more than I can, time wise. I would love to get back into this, but working 10-12 hours a day doesn't leave much time for engine assembly and doing it when you're dead tired is a huge opportunity for issues. That much I did learn when I turned wrenches for a living. The hard way...... Luckily, I have Erik, who I trust completely, to do the heavy work for me.

If I were you, I would call Jeff and tell him that you need a quick turn around and I'd bet that you can have a dizzy back before you know it. Don't be afraid to tell him who said that he'd help you out.

Re: Today the head, maybe the block for the weeken

Paul, you saying I should get this thing rebuilt?
Was working fine and I was gonna just go with it.
Everything else is new, though. Thought I'd cut
the corner on the dizzy and carbs.

Re: Today the head, maybe the block for the weeken

So, someone already brought up the Testa Rossa bit. If you're painting the block flaming red also, are you gonna call her

"LUCY" ???

Re: Today the head, maybe the block for the weeken

2W,

Many have found a remarkable change in their engines performance after doing just the distributor. I thought that it was in your plan from some of your previous postings and if you have the time, it will only help in my opinion.

Scuze' me Ron, but what do you mean "IF" I'm painting the block flame red. There's 3 cans of Dupli-Color Ceramic on my workbench just waiting to jump on that block.

I was actually thinking more along the lines of Jill, as in Jill St. John, who was/is one beautiful red head.

More bling pics coming on another thread.
