anybody have recommendations as to a good brand and size

What width are you looking for? 185/70R14 is the best all around size if you have clearance. 175/70 is also very good and retains the classic look. 195 is superb for handling but not everyone can fit them in the rear arches.
 
my clearance is ok and we are rebuilding the suspension over the winter including new springs all around so i think 185 might be a great compromise
for ride and handling
