Hi Everyone
I am looking to purchase new tires for my 71 MGB. The size i have now is 165x14, can you still get these or can i use 185-70x14?
Looks like i'll be getting new tires for Mothers Day lol
165R14 tires are still available, but harder to find. 185/70R14 tires are readily available, essentially the same size (0.8% difference in diameter), and cheaper. 185/70R14 is what I run on my GT.
I just bought a set of Toyo 175/70/14s for my GT. They are pretty close to the same height as the 165 SR 14 Michelins that are on it now (except for the one that blew). One of my books says the original size was 165/80/14, although they weren't sized that way at the time. 175s are readily available and pretty cheap. It's the tubes and spoke bands that combine to set you back.
My 78B came with 185-70s on the front and 175-70’s in the rear. One of the many no-no's the previous owner did.
So when I lowered my B (2” Ft/1.5”Rr) I decided to upgrade to the 195-70x14’s I am currently running. They’re a little tall & large, but I really don’t have any interference or rubbing, except for the most extreme of conditions. Like a really deep pothole, dip or a huge speed bump. That said I have relented and plan on changing to 195-60s here pretty soon.
