So I stopped by Discount tire today and inquired aout 175/70 14 size radials for my 64 MGB and the nice man said they would not mount them because the ones I wanted are radials and not "tube type tires". They were very nice about it and called me after I had left to say they have a Goodyear Integrity tire in the correct size they can order that would be correct for tubes.

Is this true?

I really wanted Sumitomo HTR 200s in 175/70-14.

you can get "Radial" tubes, Jay.

I put new rubber on my TR3 (with wires) last year. Now, I didn't know much about the combination of new technology tires on 47 year old rims with tube options and liner (band) options but my call to Coker Tire ( https://www.cokertire.com/ ) soon gave me enough information to work with. I had enquired about a certain size Michelin that turned out to be unavailable at the time and they suggested Vredesteins. Based on their recommendation that's what I bought; they were delivered to my door in two days along with the tubes. The rim bands came from Moss. A local tire dealer mounted and balanced the tires for about $50.

My understanding is that you want a thicker tube but that you can run it in any tire with a traditional profile. Oh, and while others have used the silicon rubber on spokes trick, it seemed like a pain to me so I went with the bands. Tires are running great, wear is even (did the alignment MYSELF with the string method), and I do not have problems with air loss.

:iagree: Coker sent me Vredesteins for my '63 Midget in 2 days...tubes came from Moss...I will use duct tape to cover the spoke ends as rim bands.....new wheels just arrived from Moss...will get them mounted next week.
 
Duct tape deteriorates too quickly. Dries out. The bands last and seal better.

I had my new Vredesteins mounted on my new wheels by Hendrix Wire Wheel in Greensboro, NC. https://www.hendrixwirewheel.com/
The tubes that were sent with the tires were the wrong size, to large! He replaced them with smaller tubes. Allen Hendrix said that's a common problem made by people who are not familiar with wire wheels. Wire wheels have a deeper groove in the rim and require a smaller tube. Otherwise they'll pinch and eventually leak. He also trued the wheels and shaved the tires to make then perfectly round. Silicon is put in the hub not the rim. It keeps any grease or lubricant in the hub from running down the spokes.
 
In my Goodyear dealership days, we used to do alot of tube tires, we would rub the tubes down with baby powder, makes them less likely to shafe against the inside of the tire. The spokes wheels on my 67 GT are the Dayton chrome tubless, nice wheels if you can budget for them, makes living with spokes alot easier. I'm running 5.5" wide Daytons and running 195/65/14 Michelins MX4s, they've been great tires.

Just another dang question.

So one of the folks I've spoke with has mentioned that a tire(radial) that has ribs inside will chafe the tube and cause excess heat.
Short of ordering the tires and looking inside, (dealer doesn't seem to know as he has none on hand) does anyone know if the Sumitomo HTR200 has those ribs on the inside of the casing or is this not a concern with radial purpose made tubes?

Sorry about the excess questions guys but this MGB is going to be the wifes toy and weekend getaway/bed and breakfast car, at least thats what I told her, while the fire breathing 4AGE Midget will be my primary way of scaring myself.

All radials that I have seen have ribs. This is merely one reason they make tubes specifically for this purpose. They are constructed differently and are more durable.

Like Hap, I always put talcum powder on the tube and inside the tire.

I wonder what the tire tech is going to say when I say

"here, use this" and hand him a bottle of foot talc?

do you think gold bond would work, I have that under the sink in the bathroom here and it IS medicated!
 
Stick with straight talcum powder... "medicated" may mean: "tainted". :wink:
