Tire recommendations

I have put off getting new tires, mine still have nice tread, but I am seeing lota of rips in the rubber in between the treads adn the fact I have had them 8 years means I should be looking. I really liked them (Yoko AVS ES100's) but as I am looking I see that they are discontinued. I see I can get a set from Utah cheap until you add in shipping. So I am looking for some ideas. I am currently running 205 60 R14 and would like 215 55 r14 but I can not find them reasonably priced.

Give up the suggestions please

I'm totally inept at mounting tires on wheels, so I just asked my local shop to order the tires I wanted. They sold them to me for the same price as TireRack was selling them, and they didn't charge me any "shipping".

Mounted the tires, balanced, and checked alignment. I'm happy!

BTW, I got Kumhos - very happy with those.

Not to throw a wrench in the mix, Pat, but at a recent car show someone showed up with a really, really sweet TR8 that he had converted to 15" wheels and tires. Filled the wheel wells nicely and looked so much more at home on the TR8.

PATR8-
What is your rim width? That will determine how wide of a tire you want to go. If you go wider you need to make sure you do not rub on the rear inner lip of the fender.

I've been using Tirerack for years... lots of tire purchases and they have never charged me shipping.

PJ - how do you do that? Every single order I've ever placed with TireRack had a shipping charge, usually around $55 for four tires.

Thanks.

Me too, though the price varies somewhat.

And my local tire store always seems to add a bunch of things like sales tax, disposal fee, environmental fee, tax on collecting tax, etc. The price out the door is generally twice what they advertise.

I out smarted myself 10 years ago when I bought my Panasports. The dealer had 15s for 30 more per rim than the 14s. He strongly suggested the 15s. I said I wanted to save the 120 and went 14s. Now it is nearly impossible to find anything in 14s. I will stay with the 14s until I get my kids off to college and have a little more disposable income but I agree teh 15s looks so much better

And I find the same thing from tire rack with them charging me for shipping, usually a little pricey I thought. My local dealer will match their price and no shipping fees. I know he does not like ordering Yokohomas for some reason

so, how will going from the 14"'s to 15"'s going to change your gearing and speedo accuracy?

:savewave:I recommend "Discount Tire"There in ALL the car mags right beside 'Tire Rack'....They will ship the tires FREE!.I purchased from them in the past they are great people with a great selection.,there on the web.

I saved a ton on my 16" Konigs and Falken tires at Discount. Like over $300 and as Ken said, shipped to my door, mounted and balanced. Be careful to bleed the air out before driving, as they ship with 60lbs psi.

Going to a larger rim doesn't change the gearing as long as your tire choice has the same overall diameter or height. Stock tires were 185/70/13, which if memory serves me right, is 23.1" tall. The most common 15 inch tire choice 205/50/15 is the same 23.1" tall. I went with 225/45/16 tires which are about 1 inch taller. They fill out the wheel well much better. I have a Ford rear end with 3.73 gears so my ratios are off anyway. The increased tire height along with the gearing, give me an effective ratio of around 3.60 to 1. In hind sight, I wish I had gone bigger. 245/45/16 would have fit in the back, and would have brought my effective ratio spot on with the stock 3.45 TR7 gearing. All for nought, because once the big motor goes in, I'll change to 3.27 or lower gearing.

Izzat discounttire.com or discounttires.com? Discounttire.com won't ship at all, near as I can tell you must pick the tires up at one of their stores. Discounttires.com definitely shows shipping charges on the web site.

However, at least for the tire I looked at, discounttires.com did come in cheaper than TireRack.

I don't know... they just have NEVER charged me shipping.

Well having searched and searched I have found Neh Neh tires, Nexus Tires, Yokohoma, Faulken, BFGoodrich, and the universal suggestion, go to 16 inch rims. I have decided to go with one of the two Sumitomo tires offered in the 205 series. I am having trouble telling the difference between the two and the price difference is $2

What two Sumitomos? I've had a good experience with the Sumitoms I've had in the past. Kumho's have been good to live with as well if you can find them in your size...

Sumitomo offers the HTR 200 and HTF H4 in the 205 60 14s. I am looking for some 16 inch rims but I doubt they will fit into this years budget
