Just watched this movie last night. That is one heck of a story, with good camera work, cast, characterizations, settings, etc. Talk about convoluted story lines and constantly guessing who's doing what - wow.
Read it when it first came out in '74. Big fan of le Carre. The parents were in a "book club" so we had "The Spy Who Came in from The Cold" a month after it released. I was hooked. Good contrast to Fleming's stories.
On a similar train of thought, ITV produced a series near the end of the cold war era called "The Sandbaggers". Good stuff IMHO. Was syndicated and some PBS stations ran it here.
I enjoyed the heck out of that movie, but I am also a fan of the old one with Alec Guinness and the novel so I was pretty psyched about it before it hit the theaters. Doc, I agree about the nice contrast to Ian Fleming, I enjoy both authors but Le Carre I always thought came across as more genuine.
Speaking of "spy stuff" - I just learned that the new series of "Foyle's War" deals with the very early Cold War days. I've really enjoyed that WW2 series, and look forward to the 1946 post-war situations. Conflict is "easier" when there are two clearly defined sides (Allies vs Axis); less so when the fog is thick and the faces constantly changing. Great stories, great period history, great acting.
