Timing Question

Greetings,
I am finishing up a complete rebuild of my 3000 MKII motor. I have decided to bench fire the motor to make sure that everything is OK prior to installing it back into the car. On the bench I have great spark and correct static timing, but I can seem to get it to even cough. I am starting to think that it’s timed 180deg wrong on the cam. Does anyone know what valves are open at TDC?

Steve

I hope this will help.. did you at any time remove the pin from the shaft at the bottom of the distributor? and possably put the dog I beleive they call it, back 180deg off. I have done this... as soon as I changed it the engine started right up.
I'am not sure of which piston is tdc on your engine. I belive its always the #1 on 4 cyl

Steve,

Not exactly sure what you mean but - with cylinder #1 on TDC firing stroke, both valves on #1 will be closed. At the same time, cylinder #6 will be on TDC exaust stroke. The valves on #6 will be almost closed, but both just slightly open.

Pod Racer,

Probably 180 out. Pull the lower distributor dog and spin it one flat. Varoom!

Congrats on the start up!!The big 6 does sound mean with open headers.
Did you install the trick rear main seal conversion while you were at it?? its cool an do-able. Skip the pre-done backplate(do your own)the rest is easy unless your fingers are too fat....I had to get a kid to install the lipspring onto the seal. Good luck on the tranny!!
