Your cam and your crank shaft would not be in sinc. Pistons and valves would not be where they should be. Valves would be opening and closing when piston was in the wrong place.
 
Yep... disconnect/cap the vac line from the dist & get under the front of the car... My 67 is lowered about 1 1/2" so I need to raise the front up a bit just to be able to see the darn mark... A little white paint or chalk on the crank-pully groove is a must!... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif
