timing mark - found

Well yesterday afterwork I put the midget up on ramps and crawled under the car once again, this time knowing what to look for and where, with thick leather gloves on and the engine running I rubbed the back of the pulley and FELT THE NOTCH. Got out stopped the car, and back under I went. Luck was on my side there it was in all it's glory, right where I could reach it, so grabbing my paint brush I marked a line across to the front of the damper. Connected my timing light, started the car, told my son to twist the dizzy until I said stop. The car is now as 10 degrees BTDC !! (I did this with the vacuum advance still connected from the carb to the dizzy, idle was about 1500)I was about 20 -25 BTDC by ear. Now the idle is steady, and no more hesitation. Now I will re do the carbs this weekend to make sure the mixture is right, I think I m a bit rich, only about 80 miles to the half tank. (and no the chokes are not open, and there are no air leaks) Thanks for the help and the pictures last week.

Boy Woodie that was a strugle. See it was there after all. For awile I thought you did not beleive us.

Always believed you jack. Just figure I needed new glasses, at 52 small things can be hard to find....oh yeah now that the car runs my 17 yr old son has started askingh when will he get the car..told him when I can no longer get in and out of it. I already have a tree picked out to put a power sling in to assist with ingress and egress....

Gona be time for son to start on his own. They tend to take better care of things if they have the work in them.

Durring one four year point when son was in High school I was on the road all week every week. Sooo, he took the Bug to school daily, all thought it was his. Boy did he take care of it, even today admits that he has never taken better care of a car. Course he helped restore it too.

Well I am having trouble getting son to take care of anything. He is just a bit lazy. But school marks are still high 80's low 90's so I shall not complain to much..

i set my timing too, it was quite a bit off........
runs better and faster on the road, but takes off
a little rough.....idles at 12-1500.....
woodie,if u do dynamic timing with a light, ur supposed to
unhook the vacuuum hose...my idle changed when i unhooked mine, so i guess its working....z

Zimmy the book says to only unhook the vacuum if the vacuum comes from the intake manifold, mine comes from just in front of the butterfly on the front carb, and make sure the idle is low enough not to kick in the vacuum advance. So I set it with idle around 1500, then lowered idle after I got timing right.

Congrats, Woodie. You've found the unfindable. I'd say the chap who designed that timing mark should be shot, but he probably died decades ago already.

It's just great if you put the engine in with the oil pan up.

Yes, he did. I shot him in 1966.

Hope it was fatal.
