Timing Chain Noise

Re: Timing Chain Noise - Follow-up

Just a suggestion, Geo, you might want to put those 6 nuts back on once you've got the dog-head bolt out. That way you can tap on the fan extension to work the entire assembly off. While it is do-able the other way (using a puller once the extension is out of the way), IMO it's easier to leave the hub, pulley halves and extension assembled.

If you do use a puller once the extension is removed, you'll need something to stick down the hole, for the puller to bear against. I forget the thread offhand (5/8 NF perhaps?) but I have a bolt with a center-drilled head that I use for the purpose. Also don't forget to orient the timing hole properly when you reassemble. It goes opposite the keyway!

Thanks! I like that idea -- I was following the manual but can see that keeping it all bolted as one piece may get it done easier.

OTOH - about how long is that 5/8 bolt you're using? Guess it isn't too long since if I have to use a puller the extension will be off.

From memory (it's been awhile), about 2.5" or maybe 3".

But you may not need the puller, some of them are loose enough to slide off with just some encouragement from a soft hammer. I needed the puller because my crank nose (on the wrecked 3A) was worn undersize and the hub was mounted with Loctite.

Another advantage of removing the pulley and extention assembled, is that the TDC hole position can not be screwed up since it can only go back on one way because of the key way.

The lenght of the bolt, less head is 5.5 inches, diameter is 5/8" and the threads are 18 TPI. I believe this is UNF. The threaded portion is about 1 3/8" long.

As Randall said, I was able to pull mine off without a puller. Some light tapping on the hub extionion was enough to get it started and pulling by hand got it off.

What I found inside the the cover:

Tensioner.jpg

That small piece was loose and looked to be a fresh break.

The inner edge of the cover showed 2 wear marks, the one on the left is older and shallow, the one on the right appeared fresh and deeper where the tip of the broken tensioner was going to work on the cover. Considering how short a time it was making the loud noise it had made quite a gouge.

Well, definitely time for a new one!
