timing chain and gears

Offline
ok most of you know im rebuilding my engine things are going well i ordered a standard timing gear and chain set from moss upon installation the "bright links" do not align with the "dots" on the gears as did the old set no matter what position the pistons are in did they send me the wrong timing set? i can get the timing as specified but the marks and bright links wont line up that will make the next person who rebuilds this engine more nuts then he is all ready, how important is this?,any suggs./advice, thanks a7777. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/savewave.gif

I had a similar problem when I put my new motor together. The chain I got from Moss had only 1 bright link so I got the old shain, counted links between the bright links, marked it and then followed the installation instructions from there.

7777;s Just get 15 links dot to dot and you will be good to go.---Keoke

I looked at the picture in the Factory Service Manual and counted the links in between. Always have done it that way and it always works. The distributor lining up is another issue it's either correct or it's completely 180 out. Static time and you won't have any problems.

Why count the ones in between when you can count the ones that line up!.--Keoke

Just a reminder to all folks rebuilding AH engines. Make sure the flywheel "1" mark lines up where indicated in the shop manual with the #1 cylinder at TDC. If you don't, or assume the PO has it correct, It'll start and idle just fine, but when you start to accelerate you'll realize a severe vibration.

gents, ok bright links "out da windah" 15 inbetween and sheza gunna run clean, tanks all, /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/savewave.gif

NO! not 15 inbetween. Count 15 links DOT to DOT Just like the old bright links use to be---Keoke

Scuse me for confusing things. I think the problem is in the definition of links. Two of the 15 links "dot to dot" are actually half links, if you consider that a "link" has two pins/rollers.

I think the attached pic shows the story. OK Keoke? The pic may not be oriented exactly correct but the "link/pin" count is correct.

Yep, that is a good piccy for them to follow. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thankyousign.gif---Keoke

Set 13 outside links between the Dots = 26 Pin/Rollers.
