Timing Advance
Ok, im thinking that I have the carb issue done. However the car is acting like the timing advance isnt working,Motor wont rev past 3000-3500 RPM.The dist number is 41815A.Thinking that the advance springs arnt working. What do you think?
My Haynes manual is telling me that the motor needs 8deg of advance, when there I get carb backfire. It goes away when therre is 16 to 18 deg of advance. what gives?
Thanks in advance! haha

8°~10° before TDC should be right, idle below 1500 RPM.
Max centrifugal advance is supposed to be 14°~16° at 2500RPM.

Have you checked to be certain the mark on the pulley is accurate?

I did remove the #1 sparkplug and with the piston at TDC the pully mark was at the First/or top of the five timing tabs.
I will check the timing again tonight.

What other reasons would it backfire thru the carb?

Is the timing advanced in the dist. with weights and springs?

Bad valves... but we don't wanna go there just yet.

If it is the original 43DM4 dizzy, the advance plate would likely be disabled.

Weights and springs under the plate, check to make sure they are free on the pivot pins and the springs are intact.

Lastnight I installed exterrior mirrors, that completes our driveway paint job and fixed the exhaust leak at the manifold.

Didn't have much time to play with the timing however I did set it to 10 deg BTDC, and just as before, when reved, backfire thru the carb. I resolved to holding the carb at WOT with one hand and adjusting the dist with the other to find the sweet spot. No backfire and will rev past 3500.

While all this was going on my neighbor came over to tell me about another MGB that is in the area for sale. Seeing my loaded 9mm on the workbench,he asked "what is that for?" Just in case.

Took two laps around the block and upon returning the batt was dead!!! I LOVE THIS CAR! I can't kill it!

Going to the lake this weekend taking a break from the B.

Have a Great weekend.

Funny, I keep a .380 on mine...

I was gonna suggest you time it "by ear" but weren't sure of your experience level. That has been answered by the last post.

MGB's are ROBUST little beasties, an ex-pat English pal of mine decalred them to be able to run in the bottom of a bucket of [censored] even if they're running only half right.

Wazzamatta, Don? Never see a guy time a car "by ear" before? :jester:

Scare you? sometimes I scare myself!

The new top was here when I got home today,I ordered it yesterday. Installed, looks and works great.

Thinking about the way Darla (my daughter named her:smile:)was running. I picked up a new set of sparkplugs gaped and installed. also thinking that mabey the valves wern't adjusted correctly checked them and all good.

What was I thinking? 13 years in a field and the sparkplugs are bad???

She was running like a top until..... BACKFIRE and shut down, I know that sound, timing chain/belt skipped or broke..

As I was kicking rocks waiting for the tow truck. Mabey its the dist?? (you know that last thing you touched rule.)
Sure enough it had fallen out. I had over tighten it with my supper strong un human like arms.

The tow truck driver dug the B so much that it was no charge,Also helps that we went to high school together.
Anyway flattened out the clamp and stabbed the dist back I am back in business.

If one of you guys could give me some direction on how to post some pictures I would love to share.

Thanks, Dave

There's a tutorial in here someplace, but the short version is: hit the "Switch to Full Reply Screen" button below the text field, do the same with "File Manager" link in the next frame and chase down the pix on your machine with the pop-out file management warez.

Size limit is something you may have to deal with, you may need to reduce the size of the photo file. Any of the "paint" programs available will allow you to do that.

Our Fearless Leader, Basil, has put up this VIDEO as a guide.
