time to rewire my "B"

i think im going to rewire my B over the winter. most if not all the wires i have come across are either broken brittle or worse yet spliced.

im hoping to upgrade my wiring to a more modern system with relays better connectors ect all in the hope of greater reliably and Brighter lights


any suggestions on kits or suppliers mgb specific would be great

Another vote for British Wiring. I added relays for my lights (high, low, fog) and horns. They have everything you need. Dont forget to replace the main battery feed, BW make one that is an exact fit.

When it comes time to replace the harness, cut the various tapeouts off leaving the last three inches or so in-situ (still connected the the various loads). You'll have a guide for what goes where when you route the new harness and connect the leads. Clean up or replace and loose or corroded bullets and lucar connectors. Whatever you do, don't ask if it is better to crimp or solder them. Pick a method and go with it.

And take digital photos of everything; they will be invaluable.

I would go with British Wiring. They have done some great work with the fit, and look of the wiring harness. I have spoken with them concerning a new harness for my 65, and after hearing from others who have used their product, I couldn't think of using anybody else's harness. A link to the site is below.

Actually, that links's for Advance Autowire....an EXCELLENT CHOICE...run by Dan and Mike Masters...I have one of their looms in my B/GT V8, especially built for my application.

British Wiring is also a good source...and will replicate the original loom nicely. I have examples of theirs in my 1969 MGC and 1978 MGB.

im going to solder the connections. i think in the long run ill have a better more solid connection Great tip about the photos


i still havent decided who to by the harness from but i dont think i can go wrong with the choices you guy have given me

Sorry about that, of course it's advance! The BritishMCCE url always throws me. And it's advance with the sale til the 8th. Both are good choices, and as with brakes, saving a few bucks sometimes is very expensive.
 
I have Advance Autowire's Headlight Relay kit in my '76. I absolutely love it. The relay kit may be slight over kill with a separate fuse for each low and high beam, but the fact that it takes all the headlight current out of the turn signal stalk and routes it through relays instead, makes me a much happier camper and much more confident that my turn signal stalk won't give up its precious Lucas Switch Smoke any time soon. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

I like the idea of having relays in the car, a much better design than the two fuse setup on the early cars. When it is time for my replacement, I see many relays lined up behind the dash, or should they be called smoke containers?

I think you got your suppliers mixed up. The link you gave above is for Advance Auto Wire not British Wiring.

British Wiring will supply you with a excellent quality original harness. https://www.britishwiring.com
They are also one of the component suppliers for Advance Auto Wire.

Advance Auto Wire will supply you an uprated harness with blade style fuses and relays. https://www.advanceautowire.com. Click on their instruction manual to note the upgrades.

Both companies seem to have good reputations on the various British automotive forums.
