Time Magazine's "The 50 Worst Cars of All Time"

I didn't know the Corvair came with anything less than six cylinders?

Well, none of them came from the factory with less then six cylinders, but after awhile, only four worked! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

The article was obviously tongue-in-cheek. It was a fun read, nothing more, nothing less. A lot of 'facts' were bogus, but that wasn't the point of the article. It was pure entertainment. Besides, anyone who puts a Lotus Elite in a list like that, does not know what he's talking about. But, the fiberglas monocoque did have issues didn't it? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cheers.gif

I have a degree! Therefore I AM!
OVEREDUCATED IDIOTS says me!
Schooled in a {F.L.W.L.} colledge, and thier opinion is the ONLY opinion that matters!

if you can`t figure out what F.L.W.L. is
Hint:
Berkley {and many many others as well}
Walking on thin ice here, I`ll shut up now!

Re: Time Magazine's "The 50 Worst Cars of All Tim

Hi Folks;

They Crusified an "MGA Twin Cam"!!!!!!!!!

Whomever wrote the stupid article must have been doing drugs, drinking or perhaps just wishful thinking that he/she Coulda, Shoulda, had any one of those cars & probably "DID`NT"!!!

At least they did`nt pick on any TRs!!

Regards, Russ /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banana.gif

PS: If I`m not mistaken; The "Corvair Monza Spyder" was a 6 cyl. turbo putting out approx. 180hp or was it 140hp? It was one or the other or both options were available: "FAST MACHINE"!!

Is that a dig at TR7 owners, or did you just miss it? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

There are so many rumors and legends quoted as fact, so many contradictory criteria used, so many mistakes, so many baseless opinions, etc., etc., that this article simply is NOT worth further comment. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Anything to propagate myths, distort facts and twist history, instill panic in the masses with hysteria and sensationalism of minimalistic subjects - that is the best media and journalists can do these days I suppose. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/spam.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/lol.gif

I am sure the large loyal following many of these cars enjoy today speak much louder than sensationalism, misinformation and the outright lies contained in these individual cars fictional dossiers. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/pukeface.gif

Re: Time Magazine's "The 50 Worst Cars of All Tim

Any such list that does not include the Austin Maxi and Hillman Avenger is evidently compiled by people who know nothing about cars! I owned one of each, and I can tell you that they were apalling! The Morris Marina was similarly awful. Never had one of those, thankfully, but I got to drive several of them.

Re: Time Magazine's "The 50 Worst Cars of All Time"

No Honda 600?...Subaru 360? No famous Honda Civics that broke in half from rust and Honda bought them back? How about a Daihatsu?

Who did the judging? Consumer Reports?

I suspect you're right, Art. Trouble is, it's not really presented as entertainment; rather, it's presented as fact and will be taken as such and later repeated ad nauseum by far too many casual, uninformed readers. It's similar to the effect through which luck and/or promotion make "stars" out of the Sanjayas and William Hungs of "American Idol" fame (infamy, if you will) and sheer persistence (annoyance?) helped sell thousands of Ron Popeil's Pocket Fisherman and other, uh, stuff that really doesn't work.... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rolleyes.gif

Ok, this time I really mean it: The above is my last word on the topic. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Re: Time Magazine's "The 50 Worst Cars of All Tim

I know it couldn't have been a real article. The Herald wasn't listed. Saw my first Vitesse Convertible. In fact there was 3 of them. I loved it. I never knew they look like the Herald. Told my wife I want 1 and she says "at least it looks better then a Cortina".

Pretty neat cars...essentially Heralds from the windshield on back. I'm guessing you were at Dixon? If not, where did you see three of them in one place?

EDIT: Oh, wait, just saw your other post about Portland's ABFM. I'll assume that's where you saw the Vitesses? Any photos?

ALL the other Triumphs were good to go HURRAY!!!EXCEPT Lord Lucas & Kilroy are STILL the culprits they ALWAYS have been.
Especially the silly direction the turn signals always decide to go while your unaware.;-)
Ken

You must not have read the entire blurb on the TR7s. He dissed ALL Triumphs of the era, but said the TR7s were just indicative of the problems with ALL the TRs.

Re: Time Magazine's "The 50 Worst Cars of All Tim

Not to beat a dead horse, but, the TR7 seemed specific and the Stag seemed representative.....

I was leaving Dairy Queen on Saturday and a guy came out and said "Wow, a TR6! And it's RUNNING!" and my response was "Yep! Everyday!" but I should have said "everyday for the last 5 years!" I'll take Lucas electronics for reliability over my office computer network any day!

And I can appreciate that some might see the stag as "unusual" styling, but James Bond (Connery, no less) drove one exactly like the one pictured in the article. How can that NOT be cool? (Unless it's a sell-out to BMW)

Re: Time Magazine's "The 50 Worst Cars of All Tim

I could kick myself now but no. The triumph name plate was the sponsored marque. there was a Mayflower,3,4,6 7,8along with a Herald and the Vitesse. there were 2 more at the show. Must have pulled them all out of the closet.

I'll take the Lucas over old Bosch electronics any day. After a month of using a '70 Beetle as my daily driver I assure you that 37 year old wiring can be finicky whatever its country of origin. At least with the Lucas the only thing that really is needed with them to make them much more reliable is to clean all the connectors and make sure they are all tightly in place afterwards.

Re: Time Magazine's "The 50 Worst Cars of All Tim

Hey Obirich, are you going to Triumphest??

Re: Time Magazine's "The 50 Worst Cars of All Tim

I wonder if they would be kind enough to include the $160,000 BMW Z-8, which is now off the market. It seems that the frames are cracking and these cars are quietly being welded back together, not here, but in Germany.

It seems that Business Week saw fit to print the article last year, but then no one at Time is smart enough to read Business Week, let alone understand it.

Comparing $2,500 to $3,000 cars, mass produced long ago with 40-50 year old technology and leaving out a custom made, hand built car by a "world class manufacturer" on a sterile assembly line seems a bit unfair.
