Time for New Tires

Here's a second endorsement for the Vredesteins. I have the Sprint Classic 185/HR 15's on my TR6. They ride well, are sticky, very good in the little rain the car sees, seem to be wearing reasonably well (after 4 years) and have a great '70s vintage apearance. This is the second set of Vredesteins I put on a TR6 and am pretty happy. They are a bit pricey but seem to be a quality tire. I got mine from Universal Vintage Tire.

Coker Tires in TN has newly manufactured Michelin red line tires (185X15's) made under license from Michelin. They are expensive but he has "blims" on occasions. He does not have the Goodyear 185X15 redlines which were superior in my mind.

I bought 2 from them last time - was over $400/two tires +
tubes.
Looking for a better handling tire (W/Red stripe).

Anglia:
It is not difficult to find a tire that outperforms the Michilen X but I nver see any with a red line /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonod.gif

Let know if you can find any as I would like a set as well.

Guys, thanks for all of your input. I've ordered a set of the Kumhos as the price on the Michelins is not supported by their performance and I can only see getting them so as to have a tire that was offered back then. I had a set of Vreds on a LGC (Little German Car) and I really wasn't impressed with them after the Pirelli Cinturatos that I originally had on it. So, we'll see how the Kumhos, should be here tomorrow, work out. Rain is forecast this weekend, I know, it never rains in California, so I'll see how they perform next week.

I know it's been a topic many times, but is the consensus that with safety, style and tradition all in mind we can go with a tire larger/wider than 165/15 on a TR4 or 4A? And, if the 165/15 is good enough, just stay with that? I wouldn't want anything that might "rub" under any circumstances.

I am also at this point with my 66 TR4A IRS. I just finished rebuilding the front suspension (bushings, ball joints, trunnions, tie rods) since these were too far gone to do a proper alignment. Now that the slop is out of the steering, I have a badly scrubbed pair of Cooper Metrics, and I am wondering if there is a better tire (tyre) out there. The Vredesteins look attractive and they are only $15 a piece more expensive than the Coopers.

Also, what are the out diameters of the Vredesteins and the Michelins? With the Coopers my speedometer is reading 8 miles faster than what I am going /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/england.gif, give or take.

I was able to get about 30 miles on the new Kumhos and they seem fine. I didn't drive aggresively as I like to give the wires a little time to tighten up and new tires need to be broken in a bit.
Re: redlines. There are people who'll actually engrave the "red line" on tires. I've seen it at shows. I'm sorry that I don't have further info in that I was never interested and so I never grabbed a business card.

I bought Michelin XZX's for my TR3 about three years ago at the local Michelin dealer. Had to special order them and had them in a week. About $65.00 each. They were hard to come by then. I seem to remember the dealer saying Michelin does one run each year on them. Bought mine in the Spring.

Interesting to see the Kumho as a source for 80 series tires. I have Kumhos on my daily driver and have been happy with them. For the TR6 I too have the 185/80 Vredestein 'Sprint Steel'- I like the classic appearance, factory gearing, and the way the car rides and handles on them. I bought a pair of Redline Michelin X once - pricey... ($200 a corner as I recall!) The Vredestein seem to be good quality, I guess they've been on about 5 years now. Had to replace one due to a vandal but that's another story... If Kumho came out with a 185/80/15" size I might give them a try if I needed some. Pete
