TR2/3/3A Tightening the crank pulley dog bolt on a tr3

Tightening the crank pulley dog bolt on a tr3, I had my wife in the car with her foot on the brake and the car in first gear, but I could only get about 90lbs on the dog bolt before the clutch started slipping and the car started moaning. What have others done to hold the motor when tightening the bolt? I think the book wants 125lb, but I do not think I can get that much.

Thanks Steve

This is how I tighten my crank bolt on my TR6.

Use 4th gear to get a little more leverage on the bolt, but 90ft/lbs should be fine. I don't trust our old metal to go all the way to 125...and 100 is what I shoot for. 1st gear multiplies the torque you are adding by about 3.6 or so. 4th gear will not multiply the torque, so the brakes will hold 3.6 times more, or over 300 ft/lbs, lol. Be glad it is not a Range Rover...the torque on my Rover is 120ft/lbs, and then another 90 degrees. I calculated it to be 360ft/lbs, and it took a 6 foot cheater to get it!

Thanks for the all input guys. I should be able to figure something out with those ideas. Wow that is good to know how it multiplies, I did not see that one on the horizon. And yeh it felt like the car was pushing forward and slipping at the clutch. I must have had it in forth last time because I do not remember being concern. Moreover, that is why I walked away at 90 because I thought heck 90 must be enough the steel is old and if it breaks what will happen plus it was moaning. The fan assembly does have that 6 or 8 sided piece of flat stock around the bolt head for a locking washer, so it should be good.

Thanks steve

If you use the starting handle the first kickback should get you the extra few ft/lbs It has bitten me a couple of times

Thanks David I will watch out for that. I have never tried starting a tr3 with the handle; Don E. would do it all the time. When I was in high school I had a 1965 Sunbeam Alpine in which I found a round piece of steel that folded up in the trunk. My buddy notices the end piece and figured out it was for starting the car, so I tried it and it worked. I do remember having to get everything just right with engine and with the handle and it kick once and a while or something. The rope in the cylinder would work good also

Anyway thanks
