whats the best method for busting the tie rods free from the knuckle? I'm replacing them.

Not to be a smart alec, but a tie rod remover. It's sort of a "C" shaped device , with a fork on one end, and a forcing bolt on the other. Works every time for me.
An alternative is to give the side of the steering arm a sharp whack with a hammer while prying under the tie rod end. Often this will pop them loose. A last resort would be the "pickle fork".

yeah. I used to have one of those tools. Fork looking thing. Thanks.

I recently tried the "smack on the end" of the steering rod method when I didn't have the TRE remover. It worked surprisingly well.

yeah, I tried that. Then this evening, I found my tie rod fork tool.
