Tie rod end replace

To remove the tie rod ends from the inner ball joint assembly, what's the preferred technique? My first thought is "pipe wrench". Anything less aggressive work?

If you don't want to scratch up the inner rods, I think just a good pair of channel locks would work - they would give you a pretty good grip on the rod. You could also pad the jaws with small pieces of old rubber hose or something to cushion the grip.

... and use heat (propane or MAPP) around the outside to expand the metal to make things come apart easier.
