Throttle linkage from Ratco

Let those among you, who has not screwed up a new part or a rebuilding project, cast the first screwdriver....

G'night!!

Paul,

I ended up buying an extra cable too; You just need to be really careful about the length that you cut sheath ... once that's done and mounted, getting the correct length for the inner cable becomes easy.

The sheath is probably 6 or 7 inches shorter because the cable is moves through the sheath and connects to each end. There is a bracket that bolts (in my case) to the #3 carb. The cable then loops connects to throttle pedel shaft, loops under the #3 carb and then mounts to the bracket mentioned above.

Here is a diagram that I did a while back:

Hi Paul,
I wonder if the manifolds are expanding unevenly as the engine warms up. That could make the throttle shafts bind up. Maybe take the car for a drive to warm it up then disconnect the linkage and see if the carbs themselves are binding. I had misalignment issues with my tri-carb conversion and used double u-joints. It doesn’t look like you have the spacing for those, they are quite long.

Thanks, Shannon. I couldn't find that post or remember who posted it either. Very helpful. My carb setup is the same as the diagram, so it will be a match.

Greg, we have tried everything and I believe that we have the carbs throttle shafts aligned perfectly (both cold and hot)at this time.

I have to lean towards Bill's earlier prediction, that once it warms up the old style mechanical linkage begins to bind and will necessitate installing the cable.

Once again, the Master is correct and the young grasshopper learns a valuable lesson (or at least I hope that I will).

I have JetHot coated headers that actually run pretty cool, but that is still a lot of heat under there and the linkage only needs to get a bit out of line to have a problem returning. I think that this is the problem, because it's not as bad when cold as when hot. After first coming off choke, it will stay down at 900-950. After driving and getting heated up, it wanders up to about 1100 rpms. If you blip the throttle five or six times, it will come down, but the creeps up again at the next stop.

Greg,

Do you have a picture of your double u-joints? I'm curious about that setup.

Hi Paul,
Here is an “in progress” shot. I was waiting for a heim joint to finish the throttle cable. The double u-joint is actually 2 single u-joints. There is a shaft that links the 2 together. I separated them and did a little cutting to add the linkage arm in the center.

Greg,
What type of carbs are you running? Are they flat slides? Whete did you buy the U'Joints?
Thanks,
BOBH

I think that is absolutely beautiful. What a great piece of craftsmanship.

Yes, please. May I have a side of salsa with mine?

Thanks everyone for the kind words. Sorry, I'm not trying to hijack Paul's great work. The carbs are Mikuni HSR 42s, and they have flat slides with accelerator pumps. The U-joints I picked up from McMaster-Carr. I had to turn the throttle shaft ends down to get them to fit the U-joints, I guess every application would be different.

Greg,

Don't worry about that. I'll have another tutorial to write this weekend if the cable kit arrives as Tony at Ratco promised today.

I'd like to see more pictures of the rest of your car, so how about it?

Hi Paul,
I haven’t forgotten you, we’ve been working very long days at work. Several of us thought today was Wednesday. Here is a wider shot of the engine. At this stage, I hadn’t finished plumbing the fuel line and the throttle cable had not been attached to the throttle shafts. The cable is the arc you see above the head on the right of the photo. Originally it was a SS braided brake line, Teflon coated.

Good luck with your throttle cable, I think you’ll like it.

Shannon,

Since our installations ar the same, is there any chance that you could measure the length of your cut cable from point to point? I can then add the additional one inch in the instructions and know if I'm in the ball park.

Thanks,

Paul

Hey, Uncle Bill! I didn't get my cable kit yet and I need your picture back for reference. What happened to them?
