Three cheers for my boy!

Ok I’m busting at the seams with pride for my son right now and have to tell someone.

Anyway here’s the short version. My 16 year old son Matt who I just got custody of earlier this year and while he struggled a little the last year – this year he really had difficulty making the grades he needed to insure that he’d graduate. His grades where horrible at the 6 week marker with three F’s, a D a C and one lone A (Physical ED of course).

Fast forward to today, I was just informed by one of my sons teachers that he got a "B" on a huge assignment on "individualism" in American literature (Yuk!) on Emerson Threau & Whitman (double Yuk!), that should carry a significant amount weight towards his final grade in that class. Particularly impressive as this was one of his classes that he was failing and I haven't a clue as to how to help him. So Hooray for MATT!!!

As for the other classes he was failing - he has been really trying hard and as it stands at the 12 week mark he has one D+ (teetering on a C-), three positive C’s, a B+ and still has that A in PhysED.

Yes, I admit that we’ve had to ride him pretty hard, but to his credit he’s really stepped up and applied himself.

Got'a admit, I am really proud of my son tonight! So I guess now I own him that Miami Heat replica Dwayne Wade Jersey. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Congrats to your son! Sounds like he's definitely moving in the right direction.

Good news. Kudos Matt!I don't think I ever got an A in Phys-ed..... hehehe

Triple "YUK"....& triple congrats....biting off that assignment & comng out successfully will charge him up for future successes - take him out & let him drive the Shark (with you in it of course!)

That's a great accomplishment for him and a testimony to your support. The kid's obviously got some gray matter working for him-- just needs the chance to use it.

Thanks folks,

As I was just saying to someone else this morning - its been a really steep learning curve for all of us, but I think we’re "all" on track now.

As for Emerson, Thoreau & Whitman - I've never been a huge fan of the whole New England Renaissance and it's notion of Transcendentalism (Give me a Louis L'Amour Western anyday!). Also while I remember reading some of this stuff on my own and later in collage - I never remembered having to read any of this stuff when I was in High School back in the Seventies.

My first introduction to these guys was by my grandfather was a huge fan of Thoreau. Years later after his passing – I had a chance to read some of my grandfather's work and can tell he was heavily influenced by these guys in his self-help books, sermons & many spiritual publications.

Got'a admit it was a little hard adapting to 11th grader homework - from what is brought home by my 1st grader little girl.

Excellent news Bret! It's just going to take a little time, but things are definitely looking up for everyone involved! Hang in there and give my congrats to Matt.

I love Thoreau & Emerson - Civil Disobedience?
