Thoughts on Water Heaters?

Our water heater is going away. It's a 30 year old,30 gallon model.
I'm researching on the best way to go - on demand? Best brand(s)?
Appreciate any help,in advance.

I have a DON"T buy recommendation. We bought 3 Paloma tankless water heaters when we built the house. Should be more efficient, but the computer boards on these things are very picky about when they will run. Shuts down because of soot, dirty spark , unknown reasons. I finally pulled them all and replaced them. I could never find anyone to work on them also. One guy showed up and said he would work on it if I brought it down from the attic, yea, that is going to save me time. The replacements are Japanese brands and have had no trouble. They still have a computer board but no issues yet.

We would have done on-demand but they were just too costly.
One factor that was important, for my wife, was the need to fill a large soaker tub... man, those things just drain a heater, so we have a 80 gallon electric unit (because there was no easy way to vent for gas).

All I can add is the fewer links in the chain, the happier you will be. Ours went a couple of years ago and we replaceded it with a a Rheem, sold by Home Depot and installed by a third party - when we had problems, each blamed the other. It is also worth mentioning that it took some time to sort the issues in part because they (at least our gas heater) are getting more and more complicated. we had issues with back pressure on the electric exhaust fan (we chose not to spend the money on the new vent pipe in the chimney) - each time the wind blew the wrong way the whole heater shut off - then the vapour sensor went - and the heater would shut off - the only good news is that the power light spells out the various error codes.

Incidentally without going into a ton of detail, the employee at Rheem said to me "if you fax us your receipt and can prove to us that you bought the hot water heater after the day of manufacture we will honour the warranty." in other words, "if you can prove that you bought it after we made it, we will honour the warranty." At that point I lost it!

Is this where I point out that Rheem and Paloma are the same company?
In the same year, the company acquired Raypak, Inc., which expanded the business into swimming pool heaters as well as commercial boilers. In 1988 Rheem was acquired by Paloma Industries, Ltd., a privately held Japanese company with headquarters in Nagoya, Japan, which wished to expand globally.

We bought a 75 gallon high efficiency electric from the power co and it does a great job. Wanted an 80 gallon but they recommended a 75, don't know why, but all is well. :encouragement: PJ

Plumber friend said he would never use anything but an A.O. Smith unit. That said, most of these things today are made to last about 7 years. If you get 10 years on one, you're doing ok.

Well as a rule with 4 people in a single story family home a 50 to 75 gallon gas fired tank and a water re circulation system will suffice,
However, at to days cost pick a known good vendor.

Trying to do the whole house with a single tank less unit can be costly.
Similarly, using several smaller tank less units at select locations may not turnout acceptable either.

We replaced our water heater with a Rinnai R85 about 8 years ago. So far had no problems. You do need a 3/4" gas supply to it.

Also have a small 220v electric unit to supply the kitchen sink because of the distance from the Rinnai unit.

Very happy with the units so far.

Another thought, I'd have a local plumber install one sourced from a plumbing supply warehouse rather than a big box store. Quality is supposed to be better of the tank and I'd like to have someone local to call at 2 am when the tank blows rather than wait for one of the sub-contractors from a big box to drop by.
