Thought of the Day

When my middle niece's family moved to the Ithaca NY area years ago my niece was in 3rd grade. Seems she was only kid that had learned cursive, got it in her prior school. And when she turned in something written in it the teacher told her to stop and never use it again since they didn't allow a kid to use or know something the rest didn't, and they had stopped using it a couple years before. I gather they started teaching it again a couple years after that point since they found that being able to read it, and to actually sign your name, was still important. Gee, who woulda thought.....

Doing away with Cursive was among the really dumb things our education system has done.

Back in the 1950s our nuns taught the Palmer Method, and used the ruler on the hands if you got it wrong.
I never got it, despite all the beatings and being locked in a closet, and I still don't use it.

My nuns never engage in punishment like that, but I never was great at it. I can write in cursive but it looks like a doctorโ€™s handwriting ๐Ÿ˜

I suspect you were educated after such punishment was banned.
They even made me repeat 2nd grade.

Ah the subject of paddling. I didn't go to Catholic school but back in the 60s and into the 70s nearly all the male teachers where I went had their own custom paddles, usually about 3ft long, like a cricket bat. Decorated with decals and names considered "high used" students. I never caught one but you could hear it through the building when someone was being corrected in the hall. From the sound we all called it getting "cracked"..

I still feel that the practice is/was disgusting.
My parents were also generous with painful punishment, but never told me how to be good.
I don't think it made me a better person, in fact I would smack around my younger brother when he taunted me.
He probably still hates me for treating him that way but I learned that was the way to act.
My classmates even beat me up because I was the smallest kid in the class.

My parents were sparing with the punishment such as spankings but anytime I did get one I understood that I deserved it. I never took it as they were beating up on me. They were simply applying consequences for my bad behavior.
Very few times that I actually got spanked but when it happened, I know that I had it coming. One in particular time I remember was when I was about six or seven years old and I had been climbing an ornamental Snow Ball tree at the side of the house, my mother came out and told me not to climb that tree because I would break the branches and it was an expensive tree.
After my mother left, I didnโ€™t think she would see me, and I decided to climb it one more time, and as I got up about halfway in the tree, I looked over and saw her, looking out the dining room window at me, and I knew the jig was up. Yes she gave me a good spanking and yes, I deserved it.

I never understood the reason I was getting beaten.
Once when I failed a test on long division, it was sent home to my father.
That night he gave me the test to do correctly, but never showed me what was correct.
Every time I did something incorrectly he slammed me on my head.
This went on for hours.
I don't remember if I finally got it right or he just gave up, all I recall is the beating.
Now when I do long division it's the first thing I think of from 70 years ago.

I never got "beaten," but I sometimes (rare) got a good spanking - and I always knew why LOL! (I was a little stinker when I was younger).
I think they believed I was doing something wrong, but I didn't believe what I did was wrong when I did it.
All I remember was the beatings.
I also don't remember any of my 3 brothers or my sister getting beatings.
My grades were bad because of bad teachers, my behaviors were bad because of bad parenting.
