I was at UCSB at that time and I remember using the first versions to access data from UCLA. I never thought that it would get any bigger than that. I may have been wrong.
 
Before the internet became a thing and more common, I actually ran one of those old dial up bulletin boards from 1992 through 1996. I had four phone lines to the house with four US Robotics "high speed" modems. My BBS was called the "Cavern of Cyborg" and considering the limitations of only having four people on at one time, it was pretty darned popular.
