I know a guy who used to work at Mare Island Naval Shipyard. The saying was: "Measure with a micrometer, cut with an axe, hammer to fit."

Can't remember who taught me "measure with a micrometer, mark with chalk, cut with an axe" but whoever it was he forgot the hammer part!

Our motto in high school auto shop -
"Don't force it - get a bigger hammer"

I was taught it as "measure it with a micrometer, mark it with a grease pencil, cut it with a chain saw." And it was normally preceded with "close enough for government work."

I was working in the aerospace biz at the time.
