True story. 100 years ago when I was a padre at an army base north of Toronto we had a young recruit (from the backwoods of New Brunswick) who was so homesick that he thought he would end it all by jumping off a bridge. Unfortunately the water was only three feet deep so all he did was break both his legs. It was the sort of situation where, to talk to his parents, we had to set up a time so that they (the parents) could be at the home of the neighbours with a telephone. (this in 1985). Fortunately the military was understanding and let him go home - a happy enough ending that I can laugh about it now.
