I absolutely hated that, when the mechanics at the shops did that.
 
i like to thing the air brakes guy just put the wheel on to roll it around waiting for the drums to get back from the shop

All jokes aside... add a small piece of plastic and this is the OEM setup for Triumph Herald / Spitfire. Just a hinge with a cable hanging straight down from the dash directly above the end of the pedal.
Pedal+fulcrum+cable: K.I.S.S.!!! 👍
 
That gorilla tape will hold until they drive thru water.
