Oklahoma has some real junkers on the roads because they have no vehicle inspection and quite a few folks are below the poverty level that can't afford to fix their cars properly. It's a shame, but that's the way it is. Oh yeah, I also think there's a rule that you must remove the muffler so people can hear you coming from miles away!
Neighbors (same) got pulled over for loud muffler. The police was going to ticket when chief pulled up and asked his cop if he looked under truck. So, he asked if he had a modified exhaust. Kid said no, all original, even the rust holes. They let him go.
I had a junky 72 IH once upon a time that my dad thought was a good idea because it had an automatic, and his MS was bad enough that he was having trouble with a standard. He quot driving not long after getting it, so I wound up driving it some.
This thing had massive holes in the exhaust, and that old 345V8 sounded half way decent. I had a couple of guys want to race and I said; no, it's not fast, it's just got a cruddy exhaust.
Picturing some of you with the British sports cars with the stock oil leaks pulling the dipstick out, like the clown/magician pulling the knotted string of handkerchiefs out of the hat or bag.
I have a theory that lots of POs became POs by making "interesting" mods (or "innovative" repairs) until the car no longer functioned correctly or at all.
From my '77...
Cuts down on that annoying deep bass.
Parking brake, the real parking brake spring broke and carving this was soooo much easier than replacing it.
How to mount a luggage rack (four required).
It was wired so that the low beams went out when the ignition was off. (The high beams still worked all of the time.)
Actually, this is an incredibly popular mod. (I've repainted the valve cover, removed the rust from the backing plates and mounted them correctly [the balance ports were covered], fixed the heater [bypass hose is in pic] and replaced the rotten Bowden tube... But that wooden dowel plug is still there.)
