Thought of the day-Innovative car repairs

Stopping at a convenience store in the +2 Elan to get a Sunday paper, on my exit a man looking like he was in his fifties was telling what was likely his young grandson those knock-off center nuts will come undone and the wheel will come off at speed. Very dangerous.

I just waited for them to enter the store before I got in the car and left. No sense in countering nonsense.

Well, if the splines get bad enough, pressing the brake pedal will stop the hub and the rotating wheel will walk the knockoff right off. Saw it happen to an MGB that had a flat and the spare didn't have any splines.

Not splined, Bob. Five pegs as locators. (y)

When we still lived in Florida someone down the street was turning right - towing his boat. Being a quiet neighbourhood he didn't exactly stop at the stop sign which was unfortunate as this time there was a car there. No accident but a quick swerve meant that the truck made it but the front wheel of the trailer hit the fire hydrant. Didn't break it but sure did bend that hydrant some. More interesting was the entire cup of coffee on the passenger front windshield from a sudden abrupt stop.

Had a brand-new Audi 4000 come into the dealership the day after it was delivered, with a persistent overheat issue. With cap off a NASTY odor came from the rad. At wit's end pulled the radiator out to flush it. A mouse must have found its way into that radiator at the factory and died, plugging the coolant flow. Flushed the system and new radiator... warranty paid. Couldn't figure how whoever was tasked with filling the system didn't question why it took longer to fill. o_O

When I got my new/old car home a few weeks ago I found a nice Husky Long Articulated metric double ended ratcheting wrench.
Probably left in the engine bay by the mechanic who installed the new cat converter.

Weird. I have a fairly new 1/2 C/P that would not develop the torque to do that. Made in China, no doubt. Like Schwinn, only a name remains.

My Schwinn was made in the 60s and is bullet proof. I guess that in order to compete they had to start building a product that wears out.

I actually broke the crank on my 60's Schwinn carrying a load of Sunday Santa Barbara News-Press papers up a hill. Had to finish my route on foot.
