Pretty gruesome particularly as they didn't seem have done anything stupid. OTOH it is a reminder that especially when it comes to things like wildlife that we live in a world of risk

If you are talking about the couple and dog, it is reported that they had spray. The bear is reported to have been an old very malnourished female. Out of desperation for food, I hypothesise, she might well have shaken off one or more sprayings. Shotgun or rifle apparently should be at hand. One will be at hand for me in grizzly country in future (along with spray, which I have carried in the woods for years).
