This weekend's job: install the top

Got the soft top on Ruby Redcar today. I had sanded and primed the frame some time ago, and last week I finally got some of the black water-thinable epoxy paint I like to use. It was a good opportunity to try my new detail spray gun, and it all worked out quite well. So, yesterday I did the painting and today I did the installation.

The top was pretty stiff; it came with the car, so I don't know exactly how old it was. The top itself looked fine, but its box was pretty old and yellow. It could easily have been lying around several years. But I got it installed, and it has fewer wrinkles than I would have expected; couldn't quite get the rear window and rear edge completely flat. But I think it still looks fine.

Driving a bugeye with a soft top, especially if you're six feet tall, takes a little getting used to. My eyes are actually above the edge of the top, so I have to duck a little to look out the side window. Fortunately, though, my head doesn't hit the roof, but if I were an inch or two taller, I think it would.

Nice work.

I'm 6'1", and side vision is definitely an issue. They didn't have us longer folks in mind when they designed these little cars. The top and side curtains are snug and reasonably weather tight, but I just try to avoid using them.

Oooooh. Really, really nice.

Very nice, you will find the top will smooth out with a bit of sun heat, heh.
